Overview & Highlights
The Department of Periodontology at Pushpagiri College of Dental Sciences was established in 2006 along with the inception of the college. The MDS program in Periodontology was introduced in 2013. With more than a decade of excellence, the department maintains a fine balance of experienced faculty, advanced infrastructure, diverse clinical exposure, and active scientific research.
The department is a recognized PhD Research Centre under KUHS.
• Dr. Thomas George V, Professor & HOD, is an approved research guide under KUHS.
• Two faculty members, Dr. Prameetha George Ittycheria and Dr. Saumya John, are currently pursuing their PhD under his guidance.
• Dr. Annie Kitty George is pursuing her PhD at Saveetha University.
• Dr. Nebu George Thomas has completed his PhD from VIT and is currently a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow.
The department specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases affecting the gingiva and supporting structures of the teeth. Periodontal diseases are primarily caused by specific microorganisms in susceptible individuals. Systemic conditions such as diabetes, and physiological changes during pregnancy and puberty, can significantly influence the progression and severity of periodontal disease. The department emphasizes the strong interrelationship between periodontal and systemic health.
